Nine Men's Morris
A downloadable game for Windows
This is a roughly patched together version of Nine Men's Morris. The console can be wonky at times but the main game still works.
Ruleset based off the description of Nine Men's Morris from King Alfonso X's Book of Games chapter about Merels.
The players take all their pieces in their hands and they roll to see who plays first. And the first to play has the advantage because in placing the pieces he always takes the first space he likes, the quicker to make a mill as we said and take one piece from his opponent each time so as to trap him so that none of his pieces have anywhere to move.
And if perchance the first player should err in placing his pieces well, he is defeated because the other player retains a piece and puts it wherever it will bother the first. And make his pieces equal in number as we said and thereby wins the game.
And this game is called nine men’s morris because the pieces that it is played with are nine of each colour.
There's more before for the rules of the game described using dice but essentially rules boil down to:
- Players start with nine pieces each, and while they have pieces they will place down pieces in free spaces.
- Players can move pieces to adjacent squares once they've exhausted their pieces.
- If at any point they make a 3 man chain horizontally or vertically, they may remove a piece.
- The game ends when a player is left with two pieces or cannot make any moves, in which case the player with more pieces in the end wins.
